Calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI)

Weighing scales

Body mass index or BMI is often used to provide a simple calculation on whether an individual needs to lose weight.

By calculating the height and weight you can tell how healthy a person's weight is.

When using our BMI calculator below please please in mind that:

  • It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build
  • It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle mass

How to calculate your BMI

If you know your height and weight, you can work out which weight range you're in using the simple steps outlined below:

Pounds Feet Inches
Height(cm) Weight(kg)

For people who are considered obese (BMI greater than or equal to 30) or those who are overweight (BMI of 25 to 29.9) and have two or more risk factors, the guidelines recommend weight loss. Even a small weight loss (just 10 percent of your current weight) will help to lower your risk of developing diseases associated with obesity.

You can compare your own body mass index score to the graph below.

Please note: A BMI measurement is not as accurate if you're an athlete or very muscular (muscle weighs more than fat) as this can push you into a higher BMI category even if you have a healthy level of body fat. It's also not accurate for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or people who are frail.
